What is DHA Algal Oil Powder?

DHA algae oil, a member of the fatty acid family and an ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid, is produced from algae species such as Schizochytrium, Ulmus occidentalis, or Crypthecodinium cohnii through fermentation, separation, and purification. It is an edible oil rich in DHA (40-50% DHA). DHA contains 22 carbon atoms and 6 double bonds, making it structurally unstable and susceptible to degradation under the influence of light, heat, oxygen, acids, and alkalis.

DHA algae oil is primarily used in food applications in microencapsulated form. Microencapsulation of DHA in algae oil effectively prevents oxidation and deterioration, improves its oxidative stability, extends its shelf life, and imparts new, superior properties. Currently, DHA algae oil microcapsules are primarily water-soluble, with a small number of hydrophobic microencapsulated forms also available.

Currently, the main sources of DHA are fish oil and algae oil. Many studies have found that DHA algae oil has multiple functions, including anti-oxidation, immunity enhancement, anti-tumor, promoting brain development, promoting eye nerve development, delaying aging, improving obesity, protecting the liver and lowering blood lipids.

Basic research has confirmed that DHA accounts for 93% of the total omega-3 PUFA in the retina. DHA can increase the plasticity of the rod membrane, facilitating membrane curvature to better accommodate changes in rhodopsin conformation.

Studies have found that DHA algae oil can improve acute alcoholic liver damage, possibly through inhibition of the TLR4/NF-KB pathway and improvements in intestinal flora.

Because DHA is crucial for the formation and development of infant brain cells and visual organs, and is beneficial for children's thinking and memory formation, many countries have approved the use of DHA algae oil in infant and children's food production.

Microencapsulated DHA algae oil is first mixed with flour, starch, and milk powder, then mixed with water and other ingredients and thoroughly blended. The product is then produced using the same subsequent steps as regular biscuits.

Oils and Fats

The application of high-DHA algae oil in peanut oil and olive oil has been studied. The shelf life and DHA stability of vegetable oils enriched with DHA algae oil additives under low- and high-temperature cooking conditions have been studied.

Oral Preparations
DHA algae oil oral preparations primarily come in powdered form and soft capsules, with soft capsules being the most common. These are marketed as health supplements. Powdered preparations are generally produced using microencapsulation technology, while soft capsules are typically made by directly encapsulating the microalgae DHA oil.
