DL-α-Tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E), the collective name for tocopherols and tocotrienols, is a
fat-soluble vitamin. It is an important component of cell membranes
and a major antioxidant in cell membranes.
DL-α-Tocopheryl acetate is widely present in plant and animal foods. Animal foods are
primarily in the da form, while vegetable oils contain a high
concentration of DL-α-tocopheryl acetate, which is comparable to
levels in polyunsaturated fatty acids such as linoleic acid.
DL-α-Tocopheryl acetate is an antioxidant of polyunsaturated fatty
acids. It forms complexes with polyunsaturated fatty acids in cell
membrane phospholipids, stabilizing the membrane structure and
protecting PUFAs in biological membranes and sulfur-containing
enzymes in cells from oxidant damage. When DL-α-Tocopheryl acetate
is deficient, PUFAs in red blood cell membranes are susceptible to
peroxidation, damaging the red blood cell membrane and causing
hemolysis.
